I Cheated, Now What?
You made a choice outside your values.
Now what?
Maybe you are carrying guilt. Maybe you are afraid of what will happen if your partner finds out. Maybe you keep going back and forth between wanting to tell them and wanting to protect them from the pain you imagine will follow.
And underneath all of it may be one exhausting question that you lay awake at night ruminating and googling about:
“What am I supposed to do next?”
When we are overwhelmed by fear, guilt, or shame, it can be tempting to make decisions based on one goal: make the discomfort stop.
Sometimes that means avoiding a difficult conversation. Sometimes it means trying to control how another person feels. Sometimes it means rushing toward a decision simply because uncertainty feels unbearable.
But avoiding discomfort and living according to your values are not always the same thing.
I am a Therapist licensed in Texas, Colorado, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Illinois helping people decide what’s next after infidelity. If there is one thing I could tell you in a brief blog post it would be this…
Start Somewhere Different
Instead of immediately asking yourself, “Should I tell them?”, consider starting with:
What kind of person do I want to be in this situation?
What values do you want your choices to reflect?
Maybe it is honesty.
Maybe it is courage.
Maybe it is compassion.
Maybe it is accountability.
Maybe it is integrity.
Knowing your values does not automatically tell you what to do. It gives you a direction from which to explore the decision.
The harder question is often:
What feelings am I unwilling to experience in order to live according to those values?
You may be trying to avoid your own guilt, fear, or shame.
Or you may be trying to prevent your partner from experiencing anger, grief, or hurt.
That distinction matters.
You cannot control another person's emotional response. And you cannot always wait until you feel comfortable before taking a values-aligned step.
The worksheet goes deeper.
My Values-Aligned Decision-Making Worksheet is designed to help you slow down before making a decision and look honestly at what is driving you.
It walks you through a values exercise, identifies the emotional barriers that may be influencing your choices, and helps you create a concrete next step.
It won't tell you what decision to make. It won’t shame you for the choices you have made.

You cannot control every outcome.
But you can choose the values you want to carry with you as you move forward.
